Best Food Dorayaki Recipe

There are a few theories of this. One is that the origin of the name comes from the fact that the shape is similar to the gong of a Japanese musical instrument called “Dora”. Another theory is that the cake was baked on this musical instrument, hence became to be called “Dora Yaki”.

I am from the Kansai region of Japan. In Kansai, Dorayaki is known as “Mikasayama Manju”. Because the famous mountain Wakakusayama in Nara prefecture is also called Mikasayama and the round shape of Dorayaki look like the shape of the gentle slope of that mountain.

DORAYAKI RECIPE
Yield :   12 dorayaki
Slightly adapted from  Norhayati Samsudin Azin MAHN

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cup plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoon condensed milk
  • 2  tablespoon oil
  • 3 medium eggs
  • 3/4 cup  water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1  tsp vanilla essence


FILLING

  • 2 cups chocolate spread or red bean paste


DIRECTIONS:

  1. Whisk together flour and baking powder in a mixing bowl.
  2. Beat sugar and eggs until  fluffy.
  3. Mix in condensed milk, honey, water and vanilla.
  4. Add this mixture onto flour, mix until well blended.   Rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Heat a non stick pan, coat with little oil, wipe the pan with kitchen towel.
  6. Pour 1/4 cup of batter in the middle of the pan.  Do not spread.
  7. When bubbles appear, flip and cook the  other side until it turns brown.
  8. Remove and spread with your favorite filling and sandwich with another.
